Typical of the two dozen or so resorts sprinkled around the lakes; rustic Black Pine Beach Resort on Lower Whitefish Lake (also known as Pig Lake), with 13 housekeeping cabins tucked into pine woods dotted with distinctive silver birch. The resort has a sand beach and boats for guests. Cabins feature knotty-pine paneling, carpet, full kitchens, fireplaces (with wood provided), outdoor grills, and decks. Alongside the beach is a large barbecue pit.

Mary Schmidt of Pierz, a storyteller and collector of vintage clothing, presented "Dressing Paul Bunyan: Legend and Love of Work Clothes" in front of nearly 20 people at Black Pine Beach Resort in Ideal Township, owned by Bob and Lynn Scharenbroich. Schmidt's stories explore Midwest working men and women over the last 50 to 100 years, all told through the clothing of the time.
